2. Other surveys

Aesthetic sense is not easy to map. Posters are a good starting point because there are many observations and insights that can be made about the community through this medium. These insights can be deduced since there are elements of

composition
stylisation
typography
color
graphic elements

Other surveys which will detail the visual preferences

art - periods,movements,

architecture - materials,grids

music - from collected data map the album art

products

furniture

there were few sets created with the above ideas.

8.mood board - underlying grid - ranking

The posters are arranged according to the table developed with the forumla. The mood board has been visualized with an underlying grid developed from the ranking graph.

7.The formula

Sorting the poster according to rank
A fomula was devised for sorting the posters. The score is determined by
(C2*(6/100))+(D2*(10/100))+(E2*(30/100))+(F2*(50/100))-(B2*(4/100))
c2 - the number of votes for preference point 2
d2 - point 3
e2 - point 4
f2 - point 5
and b2 - point 1
4% of b2 is subtracted from the score calculated with the other fields since no negative marking or 'do not like' choice is not provided.. therefore point 1 will be the minimum possible point.
which could have been selected by users to indicate not at all preferred..

the new ranking is as shown below

6.Data Visualization

The raw data collected from the survey went into processing.
total number of respondents 32( and counting )

i first analysed the percentages. but the results were ambigous

New strategies were experimented
Data was sorted with only the highest points of preference( by the number of votes in the rating of 4 and 5)

3.Initial glitches

The survey was first conducted with printed survey sheets which was passed around campus.
I recognised various problems with this survey

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Strengths
Quick realtime results
opportunity to discuss and comment

Weaknesses
the size of the paper limites the number of images

The size of the image brought down the clarity

the process and tabulation fails if the images are divided to pages as the rankings were observed to be determined by a comparitive process. The students based thier ranking by in relation to all the images on the page.

Walking around and collecting sheets became very time consuming

Action taken
Let the survey happen as and while i am processing collected data
an online poll was setup. Which is what has been displayed below
